One
of my most vivid memories of spending time with my grandparents was when I
turned four years old. Grandpa Tony
and Grandma Josie took me out on a special date, just the three of us. That was a really big deal, with me being the
youngest of three brothers. I remember
holding their hands as we crossed a busy street to an old-fashioned ice cream
parlor. I was probably told I could have
whatever I wanted – I don’t recall that detail.
But I clearly recall the large banana split that was put in front of me,
and that only a cup of ice cream given to the two of them. After digging in for awhile, I was prompted
by grandma that I would probably need her help.
Determined to live up to their big-boy expectations of me, I assured her
I could handle that thing all by myself.
And I did, down to the last drop, despite her apparent “doubts” by
offering to take some a couple more times.
It wasn’t until the next day, when I heard my mom laughing on the
telephone with grandma, that they had planned that we all share it, and I had
cut them out of the action! It was a
little thing, and a little memory, but it has always stuck with me.
LESSON LEARNED: I was already overeating as a four-year old. Wow.
